Every step away from Julia was killing him. He’d rather have stayed with her and protected her. Regardless of his other more intimate thoughts, his focus first and foremost was her safety.

When he got back downstairs, he turned to the security guards. “No one gets in here.”

They nodded. “We got you covered.”

He checked his M4 and the number of mags he had left, then headed for the front gate. Along the way, he saw dead bodies, some the Niger guards, Darkside security and others—the force who had attacked the embassy.

This had to be the same people who had taken the NCIS agents. The concern for Shea came to the front of his mind. Did Hemingway even know she was missing? Once they cleaned up this mess, he had no doubts that Joker was going to want some answers.

For the first time since Lieutenant Jackman had taken over their team, Professor felt no anger, but the resentment was still there. He wasn’t sure how he wanted to think of him and whether Joker deserved his respect.

Part of him felt guilty about that. He was a fellow brother, and he had gone through BUD/S like the rest of them. Was he giving in to the rumors that Jackman had it easier because his father made it so? Or was he just pissed that he’d taken Adrian’s place? Was it as simple as that? He pushed away his conversation with Adrian, not wanting to delve too deep into what his former LT had said about Professor letting Joker down.

That was way too much for him to process between Julia, his desire for her, the missing NCIS agents, and fucking staying alive.

“Miss Whittley all tucked away in cotton wool?” Blitz asked.

“She’s secured,” Professor said, giving Blitz a glare.

“You have no sense of humor regarding that pretty thing.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Bon sang, Blitz. Leave him alone about Julia. Can’t you see he’s in love with her?”

Blitz smiled, the bastard. “That true, lover boy?”

“None of your goddamn business.”

Blitz laughed softly. “Yeah right.”

“We have a job to do,” Professor said. For the next hour, they searched every inch of the compound, but whoever hadn’t fled from the fight was dead. The mayor had already commissioned a company to erect concrete barriers to deter another breach and sent another squad of guards to continue with security along with the assurances that a new gate would be ready ASAP.

Once the embassy was completely secure, Professor and Gator were on body duty. They started moving the Niger guards to one area to be identified and buried by their families, the Darkside security personnel to another. The terrorists went to an area where Rose was. She was working on identifying them.

“Do you think this is part of that street gang? That they somehow turned into terrorists?” Professor asked. “Displaced aggression can sometimes start revolutions.” They stopped near a guard and Professor squatted down, working his hands under the man’s shoulders. He looked young. Too young.

“No, I think there’s an ideology and a movement here.
